Civil war........

Summary of civil war, which I found .....
Bleeding Kansas

1)      Was a term used by Horace Greeley to describe the violent hostilities between pro and antislavery forces in the Kansas territory during the mid and late 1850’s. Under the terms of the act, two territories were to be formed, Kansas and Nebraska. Territory elections were held in 1845 and 1855, in which the proslavery forces won.
2)      The out come of Bleeding Kansas let to the civil war because it divided Kansas and Nebraska. The pro and antislavery forces argued about who was right and who was wrong.

The Lincoln- Douglas Debates

1)      The Lincoln Douglas debates were a series of formal political debates in a contest for one of Illinois Senate seats. Abraham went on to lose the debate to Douglas. The debates helped propel Lincoln to national prominence.
2)      Lincoln believed that slavery was a bad way of life, and that it should be stopped. Douglas believed that slavery was keeping the balance between the states.

The Caning of Charles Summer
1)      Sumner was an anti-slavery Republican from Massachusetts and Brooks was a pro-slavery Democrat from South Carolina. May 22, 1856 Preston Brooks beat Charles Sumner into unconsciousness on the floor of the United States Senate.
2)      This caused tension between the abolitionists and pro slavery people. The attack was a mark for the war to come.

The Wilmot Proviso

1)      The 1846 Wilmot Proviso was a bold attempt by opponents of slavery to prevent its introduction in the territories purchased from Mexico following the Mexican War. The territories didn’t want slavery to enter.
2)      This act became an irritation to the territories purchased from Mexico, and helped kick start the civil was.
